Pillars Leadership Program

Student reflection

Over the past four weeks, students aspiring to improve their leadership skills have completed the Pillars Program. It included sessions on Dominican leadership, organisational skills, self-care and wellbeing, effective communication and lessons about resilience. We were also given the opportunity to ask the current College Captains Jade and Charlotte any questions we may have about leadership.

We found every session within the Pillars Leadership Program extremely interesting. We both thoroughly enjoyed learning about resilience and motivation, as we believe that it is an important part of everyday life, as well as within a leadership role. The session that discussed ‘leading in challenging situations', was especially useful as it is an aspect of leadership that definitely needs to be considered. We were able to change our views and learn new ways to approach challenging situations if confronted by them in the future. This not only will apply to situations within school and leadership roles, but also outside of these environments. The session on effective communication was particularly interesting as public speaking and communicating with others is a major aspect of leadership and one that many struggle with.

We both enjoyed the session of self-care and wellbeing as it gave us an insight into how important it is to look after yourself. We learnt that a way to manage stress is to seek assistance and sometimes say ‘no’ to things you don’t have time to do. Whilst hard to do, this is an extremely valuable lesson.

Overall, the Pillars Program was a great experience and has taught us many new things that we will be able to transfer into next year to form an effective leadership team.
